REBUTTAL: Sokoto FA boss dares President Tinubu: Why Hiding Behind FIFA Shield Won't Save Nigeria's Decaying Football Federation

Chief Mohammed Nasir Saidu’s defense of the status quo is a classic masterclass in institutional diversion.

By weaponizing the familiar bogeyman of "FIFA sanctions," the Sokoto State Football Association Chairman effectively argues that the Nigerian presidency is powerless to halt a system widely viewed as stagnant, non-inclusive, and fundamentally broken.

To suggest that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria cannot intervene when a national asset is eroding under the weight of poor governance, lack of transparency, and administrative failure is not just legally pedantic, it is an insult to public interest.

Hiding behind FIFA’s anti-interference clause to insulate an entrenched system from meaningful oversight is precisely why Nigerian football has steadily declined on the continental and global stages.

The state of Nigerian football today speaks for itself.

THE FAILURES OF THE CURRENT NFF BOARD UNDER IBRAMIM MUSA GUSAU

1. Financial Mismanagement & Diversion of Funds: The ₦17 billion presidential intervention approved in January 2024 to settle allowances and bonuses for all national teams was allegedly diverted to hotels and miscellaneous expenses. This led to the Super Falcons dragging the NFF to the Court of Arbitration for Sport over unpaid dues.

2. Poor Player Welfare & Constant Disputes: From the Super Eagles to the U-17s, players and officials continue to protest over unpaid allowances, bonuses, and poor camping conditions. This has become a recurring embarrassment for the country.

3. Decay of Grassroots & Domestic Football: The NPFL still battles poor officiating, poor TV production, lack of sponsorship, and zero commercial viability. Grassroots development programs remain largely on paper.

4. Lack of Inclusiveness & Electoral Manipulation: The electoral process is perceived as a closed shop designed to favour incumbents. Aspirants are frustrated, stakeholders are sidelined, and consensus is forced instead of contested.

5. Cosmetic Statute Amendments: After 16 years, the so-called “amended statutes” have failed to address core governance issues: term limits, independent electoral committee, and transparency in financial reporting.

6. Poor International Performance: Despite huge resources, our national teams have underperformed. We missed the last World cup, our clubs struggle in CAF competitions, and there is no clear technical development plan as incapable hands are in charge of technical affairs.

7. Damage to Nigeria’s Image: The board’s administrative monumental failures have already led to embarrassment as our dreaded national teams have lost the fear factor.

THE REAL QUESTION

Chief Saidu warns of a FIFA ban if government intervenes.

But let us ask the question Nigerians are asking:

Who is afraid of a FIFA ban when the Gusau-led board has already banned Nigeria’s teams from progress through incompetence?

What use is FIFA membership if our football is dead on arrival? What value is “autonomy” if it only serves to protect failure?

Government funds the teams. Government builds the stadiums. Government pays when the NFF defaults. Government pays national team coach.Therefore government has both the right and the duty to demand accountability.

Stopping an election to allow for genuine reform is not interference. It is leadership.

Nigerian football needs a total overhaul, not another 4 years of the same board hiding behind statutes while the game collapses.

The Presidency must act. The NSC must act. And the stakeholders must speak up before there is nothing left to save.
