FIBA reaffirms support for Musa Kida-led NBBF

World basketball governing body, FIBA, has once again reaffirmed its recognition of Engr. (Dr.) Musa Kida as the legitimate President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).

The decision reinforces not only leadership clarity but also the principle of constitutional continuity within Nigerian basketball administration.

The position was clearly stated in an official correspondence addressed to the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), following inquiries regarding the recognized representative of the NBBF eligible to participate in official engagements and decision-making processes.

In the letter signed by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zaglis, the global body emphasized that it has consistently communicated and worked with the board led by Musa Kida since July 2017. FIBA further noted that several of its events were organized in collaboration with the same board, a clear endorsement of its administrative legitimacy and operational authority.

Beyond mere recognition, this development highlights the importance of constitutional continuity in stabilizing Nigerian basketball. By maintaining strict alignment with established statutes and internationally accepted governance frameworks, the Kida-led board ensures institutional stability, protects Nigeria’s standing within FIBA, and safeguards players and stakeholders from avoidable administrative disputes.

FIBA also clarified that the NBBF remains a member in good standing, enjoying full rights and privileges

This declaration effectively dispels earlier claims suggesting uncertainty over the federation’s legitimate leadership.

With this renewed international backing, Musa Kida called on all stakeholders players, coaches, referees, state associations, and sponsors—to unite under the constitutionally recognized leadership to move the sport forward.

He stressed that distractions and parallel claims only hinder development, whereas continuity fosters structured growth, grassroots investment, and stronger international representation.

At a time when sports governance in Nigeria often faces turbulence, this reaffirmation represents a critical step toward restoring confidence, strengthening institutions, and building a sustainable and progressive future for basketball in the country.
