Team Nigeria has shot into the lead of the African Track Championships with five gold medals after 12 events were concluded on Day 1 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Four of the five gold medals came through the women in Junior Team Sprint, Junior Scratch, Elite Scratch and Junior Team Pursuit while the men added the fifth in the Elite Team Sprint.
The only individual gold medalist of the day was Osaretin Godwin who beat fellow compatriot, Divine Ogbe who settled for a silver medal in the women's Junior Scratch event.
Treasure Coxson, Mary Samuel, Patience Otuodong and Grace Ayuba were the gold medalists in the Elite Team Pursuit, Osaretin Godwin led Divine Ogbe, Ringnan Danjuma and Falilat Abdulrasaq to pick the Junior Team Pursuit gold.
Osaretin God won her third gold medal when she led Divine Ogbe and Esther Osayamen to beat South African team of Hannie Vreken, Jemma Barnard and Helen Olwage in the women Team Sprint event.
The only men's gold came in the Elite Team Sprint through Gabriel Emmanuel, Isa Momoh and Jude Obinna who beat the Algerian team.
Following Nigeria in second position is South Africa who have garnered four gold, two silver and a bronze while Algeria are third with three gold and five silver, Benin Republic are ahead of Egypt with two silver medals while Team Egypt currently occupy the fourth position with three bronze medals.
Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire and Zimbabwe are yet to register their names on the table as the competition enters Day 2 today.
