The Board of the Nigeria National League (NNL) has congratulated the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), on his recognition as the Blueprint Newspapers Football Infrastructure Icon of the Year 2025.

In a congratulatory message signed by the Chairman of the NNL Board, George Aluo, the league described the award as a fitting recognition of Gusau’s vision, determination and commitment to the development of football infrastructure and the broader Nigerian football ecosystem.

The NNL said the honour was a testament to the NFF President’s efforts to create a lasting legacy in Nigerian football.

“This remarkable achievement is a testament to your vision, determination, and commitment to creating a legacy never before witnessed in the annals of Nigerian football. We are honoured to have been part of this important journey and grateful for the trust you placed in us,” the NNL said.

The league further wished Gusau more successes in the years ahead.

“Once again, congratulations on this outstanding achievement. We wish you many more successful projects and greater accomplishments ahead,” Aluo added.

Gusau, who was born in present-day Zamfara State when the area was part of the old Sokoto State, developed a passion for football from an early age. He played the game on the streets and represented his primary and secondary schools before beginning a career in football administration.

His administrative journey took off with amateur side Club 50, where he served as team manager. He later held similar positions with Sambo Babes and Zamfara United before joining Kassim Stars FC.

Following the creation of Zamfara State, Gusau was elected into the State Football Association Board and subsequently became chairman. An accountant by profession, he also rose to the position of substantive Director in the Zamfara State Civil Service before retiring.

His public service career included appointments as Special Adviser to the Zamfara State Governor in various capacities and Chairman of the Zamfara State Sports Commission.

Gusau’s growing reputation as a football administrator eventually took him to the national stage. In 2010, former NFF President Aminu Maigari appointed him Special Assistant. Following Maigari’s departure in 2014, Gusau was elected Chairman of Chairmen of Nigeria Football, earning him a seat on the NFF Board.

He served two terms under the administration of Amaju Melvin Pinnick before being elected NFF President on September 30, 2022.

At the continental level, Gusau has served on the organising committee for the African Nations Championship, while also working as a CAF Safety and Security Officer and as a member of CAF organising committees for youth competitions, including the U-17, U-20 and U-23 categories.

Since assuming office, Gusau’s administration has overseen a number of notable achievements involving Nigeria’s national teams and football development programmes.

Shortly after his election, the Flamingos won Nigeria’s first-ever bronze medal at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India. The Super Falcons subsequently enjoyed an impressive campaign at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, remaining unbeaten in regulation time before their Round of 16 exit to England on penalties.

In 2024, the Super Falcons defeated reigning African champions South Africa over two legs to qualify for the Olympic Games women’s football tournament for the first time in 16 years. Later that year, they won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for a record-extending 10th time.

The Super Eagles also reached the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, eventually finishing as runners-up to the hosts. They later secured bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Nigeria’s senior men’s team has also won the Afro-Caribbean Unity Cup in 2025 and 2026, while the Flying Eagles reached the quarter-finals of the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The NFF under Gusau has equally intensified the use of FIFA international windows for friendly matches by the national teams, providing more opportunities for preparation and player assessment.

In refereeing, the administration has pursued capacity-building initiatives aimed at improving the standard and integrity of Nigerian match officials. The Young Talent programme, supported by FIFA, is being used to identify and nurture referees from a young age, while modern communication equipment and expanded opportunities for VAR training are also being introduced.

Infrastructure development has remained a major feature of the administration. Through its FIFA Forward 3.0 funds, the NFF has committed resources to the construction of a 68-room players’ hostel, two new training pitches and the renovation of an existing pitch.

The administration has also pursued reforms aimed at strengthening the domestic game, including efforts to improve the organisation and scheduling of the Nigeria Premier Football League and support the growth of the Nigeria National League.

The NNL, under its current leadership, has continued to attract greater sponsorship and investment while improving its organisational structures.

Another significant milestone was the amendment of the NFF Statutes, the governing instrument of Nigerian football, 16 years after the previous major amendment in 2010.

Gusau’s administration has also placed emphasis on dialogue, inclusiveness and consensus-building, with the NFF President credited with encouraging greater engagement among stakeholders in Nigerian football.

In coaching development, the NFF has facilitated more training programmes and coaching courses, including the first exclusive CAF C Licence programme for women. Nigeria was also recently readmitted to the CAF A Convention after a nine-year absence.

The NNL Board said these achievements underscore the significance of the Blueprint Newspapers recognition and reaffirm Gusau’s growing impact on football administration and infrastructure development in Nigeria.
