Enugu State Football General Assembly have expressly endorsed Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau for a second term in office as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Rising from a meeting in Enugu at the weekend, the group, in a communique signed by Prof. Chidi Ugwu and Hon Foster Chime,
Chairman and Secretary of the Communiqué Drafting Committee, among other decisions, passed a vote of confidence in the NFF Leadership.
"The Assembly expressed its unalloyed support for the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), ably led by Ibrahim Musa Gusau, and pledged its support for the Federation as it seeks to do greater things going into the future," the statement reads.
Similarly, the Assembly moved a vote of support for the Executive Governor of Enugu State for his bold and palpable strides towards sports development in the State.
The Assembly expressed its profound gratitude to all those who have supported the development of football in the state, particularly acknowledged were the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jnr, Alhaji Rauf Badamosi; as well as the Rangers management, Referees Council, Clubs’ Association, Coaches’ Association, Local Football Councils and Players’ Union.
However, the group appealed for the Governor’s support for a secretariat, while thanking him for his demonstrated support for sports development.
"The Assembly makes a passionate appeal to His Excellency not to overlook the provision of a befitting secretariat for the State Football Association as he continues his great work of bringing sports facilities in our darling state to international standard."
While appreciating all individuals and organisations that have contributed to the advancement of football in their various capacities, the Assembly enjoined Local Government Councils, as well as their illustrious sons and daughters, to emulate Igbo-Eze South LGA and its illustrious son, Alhaji Rauf Badamosi, by making sports facilities available for grassroots development.
The Assembly noted that such facilities would provide opportunities for the discovery and nurturing of raw talents at the grassroots, thereby benefiting their communities, Enugu State, and Nigeria at large.
Meanwhile, the Assembly has approved the conduct of elections into the various arms of both the Local Football Council and the Enugu State Football Association, as due in the coming year, 2027 and urged all relevant stakeholders to put their best foot forward and ensure a credible, transparent, peaceful and successful electoral process as the State looks forward to another season of football and its attendant activities.
The Assembly restates support for Dr. Anthony Okechi Ugwu's intention to contest the forthcoming election for membership of the Executive Committee of the NFF and his request for the support of the State Government and members of the Assembly.
"In addition to his demonstrated contributions to football development in Enugu State and Nigeria, as well as his enviable stature and qualifications to serve creditably on the NFF Executive Committee, the Assembly also noted Enugu State’s historic and strategic role in football development in Nigeria, the Congress, therefore, considered it appropriate that one of the state’s illustrious sons be supported to contribute meaningfully to the improvement of football administration and development in Nigeria."
