Okpebholo splashes N30m on Team Edo medalists
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo of Edo State today, at the Festival Hall Government House, rewarded Edo State athletes who did the state proud during the just concluded 2nd edition of Niger Delta Games held in Benin City.
Okpebholo, who poured encomiums on the athletes for their excellent performance at the games, said he was happy that Edo came first, adding that the money invested in preparations for the game was not a waste.
He maintained that Edo State is committed to making sure that Edo regains her premier position in the annals of Nigeria sports.
According to him: "At the opening ceremony of the Niger Delta Games NGM, I stated that Edo State is not just hosting the competition, and I promised the athletes N20,000,000.00 did I not say so, today for doing the state proud, I have increased it to N30, 000, 000.00.
When they came to inform us that we were hosting the competition, I said we are hosting to win. Today you have made that statement a reality."
"Again with a total of one hundred and eleven medals won by you athlete, I say congratulations to you all. You have made Edo State proud, we are happy and proud of you."
"Your talents is something that we need to harness, we need to build on it, we need to make sure that we invest in you so that we get the best. I commend our coaches for an excellent job, you are the heroes, you are the winnings of these medals."
"I want to special thank the chairman of the state sports competition Hon. Desmond Amadi Enabulele, you are doing very well I commend you and your board members please keep the flag flying. I will continue to support your commission in whatever capacity. I know in no distance time Edo State will reclaim their premier position in Nigeria sports calendar.
Congratulations and thank you all."
Meanwhile, the state Sports Commission boss, Hon. Amadi Enabulele, thanked the Executive Governor for his support. According to him: "Your Excellency sir, I feel very honoured to be here this afternoon to present to you our victorious 'Team Edo' that did us proud at the just concluded 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games tagged (Edo 2026)."
"Sir we are happy to be here today, to present to you our athletes that made us proud in the Niger Delta Games. It is my honour to tell that our athletes did very well in the games. Edo State came first, winning a total number of 111 medals.
"Sir, we want to thank you for the financial commitment. We see this honour as another form of motivation and encouragement for us to do more for you and our dear state."
