Fresh crisis rocks NBBF election
There has been a twist in the proposed election into the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF).
While a member of the board, Colonel Sam Ahmedu (rtd) is insisting that the tenure of the board elapsed January 31, 2026, some other members argued that the tenure started counting on the day it was inaugurated.
According to them, while it's true that the NBBF election took place in January 2022, the board was not inaugurated until October because the then Sports Minister, Sunday Dare did not recognized the NBBF board under Engineer Musa Kida.
"The Minister, Sunday Dare aligned with the faction that produced Igoche Mark in Abuja while Kida emerged from the Benin Congress. Although FIBA recognized the Kida faction, the ministry didn't, hence the Kida board was not inaugurated with other sports federations.
"It was not until October 22, 2022 that the Kida-led board was formally recognized," a member of the Kida faction told www.sportsunlimited.ng.
The member stressed that since the constitution of Nigeria is supreme to that of FIBA, Kida was not formerly function until after the unification of the two factions in October.
Going by the account of the Kida faction, the NBBF election should ordinarily hold in October when the mandatory four-year tenure will end officially.
But the other faction, which Col Ahmedu belongs to is insisting that the tenure officially ends January 31, and according to the FIBA Zone 3 president, election will hold in March this year.
