Ex-football player, partner bag jail terms for cocaine import

Former Nigeria international footballer, Segun George Hunkarin has been sentenced to two years in prison for conspiring to unlawfully import cocaine. 

Justice Musa Kakaki of the Federal High Court in Lagos handed down the sentence on July 24, 2026, alongside his business partner and fugitive drug kingpin Ntoruka Emmanuel Chinedu, who received a 22-year sentence, totaling a combined 24 years.

Hunkarin received 2 years; Chinedu received 22 years (combining a prior 2015 case and the new charges).

Hunkarin and Chinedu were arrested on June 24, 2025, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.  

Chinedu arrived on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Turkey via Addis Ababa carrying 800 grams of cocaine in 37 wraps. Hunkarin was tracked and caught waiting at the airport car park to receive the illegal consignment. 

Chinedu had originally been arrested and arraigned in September 2015 for importing 6.250 kilograms of cocaine, but he jumped bail and remained a fugitive for nearly 10 years before his 2025 re-arrest.
