Two-time CAF Champions League champions, Enyimba International of Aba is enmesh in internal crisis capable of leading the team into relegation.
At the centre of the crisis is the club chairman, Kanu Nwankwo and the Sporting Director, Ifeanyi Ekwueme, who Sporting Vanguard gathered have been having a love lost relationship for close to six months.
According to a source close to the team, the Abia State government is also involved in festering the crisis with what it's described as "near total neglect" of the team in terms of funding.
Our source disclosed that Kanu has practically funded the activities of the team, and in the process, Ekwueme has been left stranded on the development around the six-time Nigeria Premier League champions.
"The management is owing the players allowances since last year, even salaries are not as constant but for Kanu who has been funding the team, it would have been in the basement of the table," the source said.
"The players have not been given match bonuses since first round of the season, Kanu as Chairman has been spending his personal money for over three months to prosecute matches, while the sports commissioner refused to release funds meant for Enyimba FC," the source added.
Apart from the funding issue, Kanu and Ekwueme are said to be working on cross purposes. When Kanu sacked Stanley Eguma and brought in coach Ayeni, Ekwueme claimed he wasn't consulted and engaged the support of the commissioner to announce a new coach while Ayeni was in Lafia with the team for today's match against Nasarawa United.
The meeting held yesterday between Governor Otti and Kanu was at the instance of the former Nigeria international to sort out the alleged misinformation that led to the engagement of Cameroonian coach, Emmanuel Deutsch
