African Track Championships: Osaretin wins 2 gold as Team Nigeria finish 3rd

‎Nigeria's Junior Women champion, Osaretin Godwin yesterday won two gold medals to push her total haul to six gold including four personal and two team gold medals to help Team Nigeria finish third behind South Africa and Egypt as the curtains were drawn in the 2026 African Track Cycling Championship in Abuja.

‎Team Nigeria's two gold, two silver and two bronze medals on the last day of the 5-day championship held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome took their total to nine gold and silver each and eleven bronze, bringing their total to 29 medals, two more than second placed Team Egypt who won one more gold medal than Nigeria but with eight silver and 9 bronze medals.

‎Algeria placed fourth with three gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals while Benin Republic finished fifth with two silver and a bronze, leaving Kenya, Zimbabwe and Cote d'Ivoire without a medal. Team South Africa garnered a total haul of 44 medals, consisting of 19 gold, 10 silver and nine bronze medals.

‎Team Nigeria had earlier won the Para-Track Championships which ended last Monday with nine gold, five silver and two bronze medals, beating Egypt and Kenya to second and third places.

‎Chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko who declared the competition closed, commended the fighting spirit of the Nigerian cyclists in both the Para-Track and Track Championships as he promised them a personal donation of one million Naira for their efforts.
