AFN Congress is illegal - Gara Gombe

The scheduled Annual Congress of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has been declared illegal by the chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association, Alhaji Gara Gombe.

The AFN has fixed December 14 (today) to convey it's Congress and invited all States associations to participate.

But Alhaji Gombe, In a statement he personally signed, said the schedule for the Congress falls short of the Article and Provision of the AFN, both of the 2017 and 2023, as amended.

According to him, "the Conveners of the meeting did not complied with the Articles and Provisions of the AFN CONSTITUTION be it 2017 or 2023(as amended).
"Therefore, any decision taken is null and void and of no effect,it will be nullified," Alhaji Gombe said.

He stated that "for avoidance of doubt Article 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 clearly stated that Notice of Congress be sent to the secretariat of member association 60 days prior to the date of the meeting and all documents, proposals, programmes, etc related to the meeting be sent to member associations 30 days prior to the date fixed before the meeting."

Alhaji Gombe said that due to the anomaly, Gombe State Athletics Association will not attend the meeting either physically or virtually.

"Take notice that we will challenge this prejudice and the persisting disregard and disrespect to the status of Congress members of AFN whose authority is being abused at will and at all times," he stressed.

The Gombe State Athletics boss stated further that it doesn't matter if the Congress formed a quorum, vowing that "anybody who collects allowance or expends AFN money for this illegal exercise will refund it to the association at an appropriate time."
