Zenith Bank Women's B'ball League: Organisers, teams hail tourney as right preparation for season

With the 2026 NBBF/Zenith Bank Women Basketball League season dunking off this weekend across both Savannah and Atlantic Conference, the organisers of the recently concluded Louis Edem West Africa Women Basketball Championship and some of the teams have said the tournament was a good preparation ahead of the new season as they have not really played any serious games since the start of the year.

The founder of Louis Edem Foundation, Louis Edem, said the all-women championships would give the teams the opportunity to know their weaknesses and where to improve on.

“For a lot of them, it will serve as a good preparation especially the teams playing the Zenith Bank Women's League as they were part of the championship,” he said.

“This is a great way for them to prepare for the championship, all for the Zenith League. Yeah. So of course it's going to translate. They come out here to compete. In a week time, they play in the league, and it's going to help.”

MFM Women Basketball League, the losing finalist in the 2025 league season defeated First Bank in the final played in Lagos at the weekend and the captain of the team, Ukamaka Okoh, said they are coming to win back their title after winning it back-to-back in 2023 and 2024 season before losing to Dolphins last year.

In her words, playing against some of the best in the league, and coming out on top will serve as confidence booster for them.

Speaking also with our correspondent, the captain of one of the new teams, Victoria Queens, Toluwani Arogundade, the team that emerged as the third-place winner, said they are aware of what to expect when the season dunk off as they have been able to hold their won against other top flight teams.
