The one-year tenure of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) established to oversee the affairs of the newly unified Nigeria Football and Sports Supporters Club expired on February 13, 2026, raising questions over the authority of anyone or any group continuing to act in the name of the committee.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the unification and interim management of the Unified Supporters Club, the IMC was established for a strictly defined one-year period and was not empowered to remain in office beyond that period.
Article 2.1 of the MOU provides that an Interim Management Committee shall be constituted to pilot the affairs of the Nigeria Football and Sports Supporters for one year from the date of signing the agreement.
The duration of the committee is further reinforced by Article 3.1, which states that:
“The tenure of the IMC shall be strictly one year, commencing from the date of its inauguration.”
More importantly, Article 3.2 expressly rules out any extension or renewal of the committee's mandate, stating:
“The tenure of the IMC shall not be renewable or extended under any circumstances.”
Based on these provisions, the IMC's mandate came to an end upon the expiration of the stipulated one-year period. Consequently, any individual or group claiming to still be operating as the IMC after the expiration of its tenure would need to establish a fresh legal or administrative basis for such authority.
The MOU also contains provisions concerning the eligibility of members of the interim body to participate in the subsequent electoral process.
Article 4.3 states that:
“Any individual that partakes in the Interim Committee will not be eligible to contest in the general election.”
The provision appears designed to prevent members of the interim administration from using their positions to gain an advantage in the general election and to maintain neutrality during the transition to an elected leadership.
The expiration of the IMC's tenure therefore puts the spotlight on the next legitimate step in the unification process, particularly the arrangements for conducting the general election and establishing a substantive leadership structure for the Unified Supporters Club.
Until such a process is properly instituted, any continued exercise of powers purportedly derived solely from the expired IMC mandate could face questions over its legitimacy and compliance with the governing MOU.
