Rooted in Greatness: Simy Nwankwo makes homecoming to celebrate great season
Soccer fans in and around Nkpor Agu in Idemili North LGA of Anambra State are excitedly looking forward to seeing Nigerian International striker, Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo who is simply known as Simy when he makes a heartfelt homecoming on 21st June 2026, marking the end of a remarkable season in the Saudi Arabia league.
Tagged ‘The Homecoming’, the event will include a Thanksgiving Mass and novelty match as he gives thanks to God for a successful journey in his football career and to celebrate greater heights ahead.
The one day event starts with an 8:30am Thanksgiving Mass at Holy Cross Parish, Nkpor-Agu and will be followed by an all-star match at United Primary School at 4pm.
Some of the stars that will take part in the all-star game are ex Internationals Uche Nwofor and Ogenyi Onazi as well as Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi of Belgian side, Oud-Heverlee Leuven, David Nworah of Al-Sinaa Sport club of Saudi Arabia, Francis Ezeh of Turkish first division side, Ankara Keciorengucu amongst others.
Simy started his football career in Nkpor-Agu before playing for Portimonense and Gil Vicente of Portugal, Crotone, Salernitana, Parma and Benevento of Italy and currently playing in Saudi Arabia.
The Nanka born, 6’6” tall striker had a remarkable season in the recently ended Saudi first division playing for Al-Orobah which included being the joint highest goals scorer with 28 goals.
His career has been defined by monumental individual landmarks including being the first African player to finish as top scorer in an Italian Pro league when he scored 20 goals for Crotone in the 2019/20 serie B season.
As a member of the 2018 Russia FIFA World Cup Super Eagles team, he played two games against Croatia and Argentina before Nigeria was knocked out.
His journey has been a rocky one, from the bustling town of Nkpor to big footballing Nations and the biggest stage, the World Cup and yet Simy, the lanky fighter, has overcome it all and believes he is far from reaching his ultimate goal.
