The Okpekpe International 10km Road Race, the first road race to earn World Athletics Label status in West Africa, will be broadcast live worldwide on May 30, organisers have confirmed.

Since its debut in 2013, the race has grown into one of Africa’s premier road events, attracting elite athletes from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Nigeria.

Beginning at Apana Road and finishing in Okpekpe, Edo State, the course winds through 10 kilometres of hills and tarred roads, offering both a scenic challenge and a true test of endurance.

Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenyo holds the men’s course record of 28:28, while Kazakhstan’s Caroline Chepkoech Kipkirui set the women’s mark of 32:38 in 2023. Both times remain benchmarks for the competition.

The 2026 edition promises a strong field of Gold Label elite athletes alongside Nigeria’s finest road runners, with prize money and international recognition ensuring a competitive lineup. '

Okpekpe has become a fixture on the global calendar since 2015 and continues to showcase Nigeria’s capacity to host world-class events,' said Dare Esan, Media and Activation Director.

This year, the race will reach its widest audience yet thanks to World Athletics’ initiative to aggregate livestreams and highlights of Label Road Races.

By appearing on World Athletics’ official channels, with a combined 4.5 million subscribers, Okpekpe will enjoy unprecedented global visibility.

The livestream ensures that fans across continents can experience the race in real time, while professionally produced highlights will capture and share the most thrilling moments.

For athletes, sponsors, and Nigeria’s sporting reputation, this exposure reinforces Okpekpe’s standing as a Gold Label event and strengthens its place on the international calendar.

Adding to the broadcast’s quality, commentary will be delivered by a journalist with long experience in athletics reporting and a former member of the World Athletics Media Study Group, bringing expert analysis and storytelling to the coverage.

Beyond athletics, the race has been credited with boosting tourism and investment in Edo State, with Okpekpe’s hilltop setting and agricultural potential drawing visitors and investors.

With global livestreaming now in place, the Okpekpe International 10km Race is set to showcase not only elite competition but also Nigeria’s capacity to host events that resonate far beyond its borders.
