The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is in a fix on what to do with the contract of the Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle should the team fails to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The president of the federation,Ibrahim Musa Gusau, in an interview with celebrated Nigerian journalist, Osasu Obayiuwana wasn't sure if the NFF will retain the Franco-Malian coach or allow him to take the Super Eagles to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in December.On what will happen if the coach fails to qualify for the World Cup, Gusau said, "We cannot assess him with only one issue. As you have said it, he met the team in a difficult situation… But if he continues in the way that he is doing, and he gets the results that he is supposed to get, going forward, qualification is one thing and his performance is another thing. We will look at what he has brought to the team. We will see if there is any hope for the future and we will take it from there."Asked to access the current situation facing the Super Eagles, the NFF president said, "All I know is that we are doing our best, to make sure that we prepare the team. And by the grace of God, even though we have not won a match at home, we have not lost a match also. We still have matches to play at home. I want to assure you that by the grace of God, we are going to win the remaining matches at home and even away… I still have the belief that we are going to be in the USA, Mexico and Canada.Gusau added "We are doing our best to give Eric Chelle whatever he wants. We gave him the privilege to take charge of our CHAN Eagles, so that he can see some future players for the first team. I asked him what he needed to do his job and he said he needed all his assistants to be with him. I said “Fine”.
