NBBF gets directive to hold election January
The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) has been directed to unfailingly hold its election January next year, reports www.sportsunlimited.ng.
According to the directive, a new president most be elected, thereby foreclosing any plan by the current president, Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida, to contest for a third term, should he ever nursed the ambition.
The directive was said to have been handed down by the National Sports Commission (NSC) apparently in reaction to speculation that the president was nursing such ambition.
According to insider sources, as reported by firstzealmediacastblog.wordpress.com, the NSC moved to silence swelling uncertainty over the federation’s electoral timetable and growing rumours that Kida who was first elected in 2017 and now in his second four-year stretch, was considering stretching his stay beyond constitutional limits.
Some power blocs had floated an alternative expiration date of October 2026, pointing to the August 5th inauguration by the then Sports Ministry.
But the NSC shot that down too, pointing out that the board’s legitimacy traces back to the January 31, 2022 election in Benin City, conducted under strict FIBA supervision and immediately activated.
Meanwhie, Engineer Musa Kida has not openly said he is seeking a third term in office.
Vice President of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Babatunde Ogunade, has on many occasions stated that the constitution doesn’t have a place for third term and he is certain that Engineer Musa Kida is not seeking an extension to his stay as the NBBF boss.
