KFN board hits the ground running with key appointments, committees etc

The Board of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), under the leadership of its President, Engr. (Dr.) Chukwudi Dimkpa, has taken a series of far-reaching decisions aimed at strengthening the administration, technical development and growth of karate in Nigeria.

The decisions were taken at the Board's inaugural meeting under the new leadership, held on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Rooftop Conference Hall, Check-Inn Hotel, Wuse II, Abuja.

In his opening remarks, President Dimkpa described the meeting as an important step in repositioning the Federation, stressing the need for unity, professionalism, accountability, strict adherence to the KFN Constitution and collective commitment to the development of karate across the country.

Board Constitutes Committees and Commissions

As part of efforts to strengthen the institutional framework of the Federation, the Board approved the constitution of a number of Standing Committees, Commissions and technical bodies to drive its programmes and activities.

Mrs. Florrie Omueti was appointed Chairman of the Marketing, Sponsorship, Partnership and Finance Committee, while Hajiya Zainab Saleh will chair the Organising, Competition and Welfare Committee.

Alh. Bashari Maizari was appointed Chairman of the Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, while Dr. (Mrs.) Oluwasogo Ogunleye will head the Youth, School Sports and Women Committee.

The Technical Committee will be chaired by James Aina, while Olusegun Akinola was appointed to head the Nigeria Karate Referee Commission.

The Board also approved other technical and developmental structures, including the Nigeria Karate Coaches Association, Nigeria Para-Karate Commission, National Grading/Homologation Committee, Nigeria University Karate Association, and the Nigerian Karate League Commission.

Formal appointment letters are to be issued to the respective officials by the Secretary General.

Board Sets Aside Jegede's Suspension, Appoints Him Technical Director

The Board also reviewed the circumstances surrounding the suspension of Mr. Dave Jegede.

Following its consideration of the matter, the Board resolved to set aside the suspension and restore Mr. Jegede to full participation in the activities of the Federation.

In a separate decision, the Board approved the appointment of Mr. Jegede as Technical Director of the Karate Federation of Nigeria.

The appointment forms part of the Federation's efforts to strengthen its technical structure and improve the coordination and development of karate programmes nationwide.

Ohis Asein Appointed Head of Media

The Board approved the appointment of Ohis Asein, Chief Executive Officer of FAKS MEDIA, as Head of Media of the Karate Federation of Nigeria.

The appointment is expected to strengthen the Federation's media operations, public information management and promotion of its programmes and activities.

Oruamabo Co-opted Into KFN Board; Karate League Gets Technical Approval

The Board also approved the co-option of Amakiri Oruamabo as a member of the KFN Board.

Oruamabo was further appointed Chairman of the newly approved Nigerian Karate League Commission.

In another significant development, the Board granted technical approval for the proposed Nigerian Karate League, paving the way for the development of a structured domestic karate competition designed to create more competitive opportunities for athletes and strengthen the sport at the national level.

Board Approves Nigeria's Participation in UFAK African Championship

The Board approved Nigeria's participation in the UFAK African Championship in Algeria, scheduled for September 6–13, 2026, and directed the relevant technical and administrative officials to commence and complete the necessary preparations for Team Nigeria's participation.

The Board also noted and ratified the earlier formal notification to the World Karate Federation (WKF) and Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK) regarding the change in the leadership of the Karate Federation of Nigeria.

One-Year Programme of Activities Approved

To provide a clear framework for the implementation of its programmes, the Board approved a one-year calendar of activities covering August 2026 to August 2027.

The calendar will guide the Federation's competitions, technical programmes, development initiatives and other activities during the period.

The Board also considered preparations for the Japanese Ambassador's Karate Championship and encouraged members and stakeholders to support the successful hosting of the event.

KFN Moves to Strengthen Sponsorship and Revenue

Recognising the importance of sustainable funding for the development of the sport, the Board approved in principle the payment of facilitation fees in respect of sponsorships successfully secured for the Federation.

The Board, however, resolved that there would be no blanket or fixed percentage, and that any applicable facilitation arrangement would be considered and approved on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the nature and value of the sponsorship secured.

Board Orders Restoration and Securing of KFN Digital Platforms

As part of measures to strengthen the Federation's institutional identity and communication infrastructure, the Board directed the restoration, updating and securing of KFN's official website and social media platforms.

The Secretary General, working with the Directors of ICT, was mandated to retrieve the necessary administrative access to the Federation's website and official social media handles, update the platforms and ensure that they are properly secured and maintained as the recognised digital channels of the Federation.

Board Clarifies Official Communication Channels

The Board also reaffirmed the need for proper coordination of official communication in accordance with the KFN Constitution.

Accordingly, official administrative correspondence of the Federation shall be issued through the Secretary General, while press conferences, public statements and publicity on behalf of the Federation shall be undertaken by the President, Vice Presidents or other officials duly authorised in accordance with the Constitution.

The Board further resolved that no Board member, committee, commission or other person may issue statements purporting to represent or bind the Karate Federation of Nigeria without the requisite authority.

A New Direction for Nigerian Karate

The inaugural meeting marks the beginning of an ambitious programme by the KFN Board to strengthen the governance and administration of karate, improve technical standards, expand domestic competition and create greater opportunities for athletes, coaches, referees and other stakeholders across Nigeria.

President Dimkpa called on all members of the Nigerian karate community to put aside differences and work collectively towards building a stronger and more successful Federation.

The Board reaffirmed its commitment to a united, professionally administered, constitutionally governed and development-driven Karate Federation of Nigeria, capable of advancing the interests of Nigerian karate both at home and on the international stage.
