Jordan Nwora Basketball Camp tips off in Lagos Friday, targets future stars

Lagos is set to become the hub of youth basketball development this weekend as the Jordan Nwora Basketball Camp gets underway on Friday at the Ilupeju Basketball Court, with organizers promising three days of intensive training, mentorship and talent discovery.

The camp, which will run until Sunday, is expected to attract 120 young players comprising 60 boys and 60 girls from different parts of Nigeria, all eager to sharpen their skills under the guidance of experienced coaches and basketball stakeholders.

Originally scheduled to commence on June 14, the camp was brought forward due to logistical considerations, a move organizers say will not affect the quality of the programme.

Speaking ahead of the event, Alex Nwora, a central figure in the organization of the camp, expressed confidence that all arrangements have been put in place for a successful outing.

According to Nwora, participants can expect a well-structured programme designed to improve their technical abilities, basketball intelligence and understanding of the game.

"We have done all the necessary preparations. The objective is to give these young players a platform to learn, compete and develop in a conducive environment," he said.

Also speaking on the initiative, retired Colonel Sam Ahmedu described the camp as another significant step in efforts to strengthen grassroots basketball in Nigeria.

Ahmedu noted that beyond teaching the fundamentals of the game, the programme is aimed at inspiring young athletes to pursue excellence on and off the court.

"This camp is ready to add value to the game. It is about creating opportunities, exposing young talents to quality coaching and helping them understand what it takes to succeed in basketball at higher levels," he stated.

The Jordan Nwora Basketball Camp has steadily grown into a regional development project since its inception. After a successful start in Liberia, the programme expanded to Ghana before making its way to Nigeria, reflecting its commitment to nurturing young talents across West Africa.

Its expansion across the sub-region highlights the camp's growing reputation as a platform for talent identification, skills development and youth empowerment.

Participants not only receive technical coaching but also gain exposure to mentorship opportunities, leadership lessons and pathways that could open doors to scholarships and professional careers.

With the presence of experienced coaches, former players and basketball administrators, the three-day event is expected to provide a valuable learning experience for the young athletes while contributing to the long-term growth of the sport in Nigeria.
