Super Eagles star, Taiwo Awoniyi has had his sterling career record dented with his first official red card in Coventry City's home defeat in the English Premier League to Brighton.

It was Coventry City's worst home result in their history. Before the game, Coventry's first home defeat was on August 29, 2026 in their 1-0 defeat to Hull City.

For Awoniyi, prior to the match, his career record across Liverpool, Union Berlin, Nottingham Forest, and the Nigerian national team was remarkably clean with zero career red cards.

In the English Premier League, a straight red card means a player receives a mandatory suspension ranging from one to multiple matches based on the severity of the offense.

Awoniyi could further face official Football Association (FA) administrative fines alongside a standard match suspension, with specific costs depending on the exact offense. He could also face Coventry's fine for avoidable red cards, often docking one to two weeks' wages.

Awoniyi will miss Coventry City's upcoming Carabao Cup third-round match against Aston Villa on Wednesday as well as the Premier League away match against his former club, Nottingham Forest next Saturday and another league game against Nedwcastle United after the international break.
