Ashe targets gold rush in Accra after silencing critics
Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ashe has set his sights firmly on gold at the upcoming CAA Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, following an impressive showing at the World Relays Championship.
Fresh from helping Team Nigeria secure qualification for the 2027 World Athletics Championships in China, Ashe is brimming with confidence ahead of the continental showdown, which kicks off on May 12 and is expected to host over 1,000 athletes from 50 countries.
The 100m specialist played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s 4×100m mixed relay success in Gaborone, where the team not only booked a spot at the global championships but also clinched qualification for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest this September.
Now, the focus shifts to Accra and Ashe is not hiding his ambition.
“I’m in good shape, and my goal in Accra is to win gold in the 100m and also help the team secure gold in the relays,” he declared confidently.
Reflecting on the team’s performance in Botswana, Ashe expressed satisfaction and gratitude, particularly in the face of pre-competition criticism.
“Before the championship, it was ‘Ashe this, Ashe that, Ashe is finished,’ but I’ve proven my worth,” he said. “I give all the glory to God for the results we achieved.”
The sprinter revealed that the wave of negativity from some athletics followers and some stakeholders did little to shake his focus or that of his teammates. Instead, it served as motivation to deliver on the big stage.
With momentum on his side and confidence restored, Ashe now heads to Ghana determined to crown his resurgence with continental gold, turning doubters into believers one race at a time.
