Aghazu withdraws resignation as AFN board accepts apology
The 2nd Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Aku Aghazu, has withdrawn her earlier decision to resign from the federation’s board.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, the AFN confirmed that Aghazu formally rescinded her resignation after further reflection and subsequently tendered an apology to members of the board over the concerns her earlier decision may have generated.
In a communication addressed to the board, Aghazu requested that her resignation letter be withdrawn with immediate effect.
The request was accepted by AFN President, Tonobok Okowa, who also acknowledged her apology.
Okowa explained that the decision to allow Aghazu continue in office was taken in the interest of unity, stability and the continued progress of the federation.
According to the AFN president, maintaining cohesion within the leadership of the body remains vital as the federation works to reposition Nigerian athletics for improved performance at both national and international competitions.
The federation also called on athletes, stakeholders and supporters to remain united and focused as efforts continue toward strengthening athletics development in the country.
The statement was signed by the AFN Secretary-General, Israel Inwang, on March 5, 2026.
