Tears flow freely as Ndidi, siblings bid father final farewell

It was an emotionally charged and heart-rending moment in Umunede, Delta State, as Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi and his siblings broke down in uncontrollable tears during the burial rites of their late father, Mr. Sunday Ndidi.

The solemn atmosphere reached its peak when the officiating pastor asked the family to open the casket for final confirmation. At that moment, Wilfred Ndidi and his siblings, standing side by side, could no longer restrain their emotions.

Tears flowed freely as reality set in, drawing deep sympathy from mourners present at the graveside.

The burial ceremony, described by many as a grand and dignified farewell, attracted a wide array of personalities from across Nigeria and beyond. Top officials of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), representatives of international football bodies, sports administrators, political leaders including representatives of the Delta State Government, friends, teammates, community leaders, and well-wishers from different parts of the country gathered to honour the late patriarch.

The late Sunday Ndidi, who died in a tragic road accident, was celebrated as a pillar of support whose influence shaped the character and resilience of his son, now one of Nigeria’s most respected footballers. Tributes poured in, highlighting his humility, strength, and the values he instilled in his children.

Wilfred Ndidi, still grieving, was visibly consoled by teammates, family members, and dignitaries as prayers were offered for the repose of his father’s soul.

The presence of football stakeholders from the grassroots to the international level underscored the respect Ndidi commands, not just as a footballer, but as a son and leader.

Members of the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, led by representatives including Jide-Ojo JO (SSA Media) and Eniola Abiola Atanda (Principal Assistant to the SSA), were also in attendance to pay their final respects on behalf of the SSA and the Presidency.

As the casket was finally lowered, the moment symbolised not just a personal loss for the Ndidi family, but a shared moment of grief within Nigeria’s football family.

The ceremony ended with prayers, embraces, and solemn reflections — a reminder that beyond the roar of stadiums and the glory of medals, even heroes are bound by the pain of loss.

The nation continues to stand with Wilfred Ndidi and his family, offering prayers, love, and strength in this difficult time.
