Spires 5-Aside Tourney: New Generation FC, Oreon, Leon, others in semi-final showdown

The excitement got on the way at the weekend as the highly anticipated third season of the Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer Tournament kicks-off in Ikorodu.

Eight teams in the "Oga" division file out with the aim to book their place in the state championship.

The opening game of the new season set the ground with a 7-goal thriller as God Bless Football Club earns the first 3 points of the campaign with 4-3 victory over Better Tomorrow FC.

In the other fixture, Oreon & Leon FC showed class as they annihilated Amuludun football club 5-0 in an entertaining encounter.

The tournament recorded its first

double numbers in goals as Diamond football club and Adhoc FC had the fans screaming in excitement in a 16-goal contest. Demond FC at the end showed the desired composure to advance with a 10-6 triumph.

It was yet another goal rush in the final game on Sunday as New Generation FC defeated new Boys Lofty Skills SA 9-5 in a thrilling encounter at Deeonis football courts, Ota-Ona, Ikorodu.

The fallout from the first round of matches has produced New Generation FC, God Bless Football Club, Orion & Leon FC, and Diamond FC as the top teams to lock-horns in the semifinals on Wednesday.

The final of the Ikorodu Divisional qualifiers will be held on Saturday, April 18th. The finalists, as well as the best third placed side, will secure their passage as the three teams to represent Ikorodu at Spires 5-Aside state championship later in the year.

The convener of the tournament Dr. Bankole Allibay has praised the teams for their positive start to the season as he assures of a more successful campaign in 2026.

" I am happy to state that we have started well, the respective teams have approached the games with the desired hunger hence the number of goals recorded thus far, so, it can only get better going forward". Allibay added.

The Spires 5-Aside Naija Street Soccer championship will be played across the five divisions of Lagos. The top three teams in each division will secure their spot among the sixteen teams for the state tournament in October.
