Over 2500 athletes for 2026 Niger Delta Games
The co-chairman of the 2026 Niger Delta Games, Sir Itiako Ikpokpo (KSM) has revealed that over 2500 athletes are to participate in the second edition of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) slated for February next year.
Sir Ikpokpo gave the hint at a parley with the media in Lagos on Wednesday.
According to him, each of the nine states that make up the Niger Delta would be required to present 270 athletes.
" We want to build on last year's achievement and each participating state will submit a list of 270 athletes," he said.
Sir Ikpokpo stressed that the organisers was genuinely interested in helping the states in the region to harness and develop athletes, adding that it's their plan to use the High Performance Centre in Port Harcourt as training base for the discovered athletes.
"We don't want to own the athletes, it's the responsibility of the states, ours is to create a competitive avenue and help groom them for the states to develop," Sir Ikpokpo said.
Just like the maiden edition, the co-chairman said they are going to provide accommodation and allowances for all the athletes and their officials.
