...As Sports commission boss promises huge support.
All is now set for the commencement of Oredo 5-Aside football competition among schools in the local government.
Chairman of of Oredo local government Council, Wellington Obaseki, disclosed this in a media chat in Benin.
He said that the completion is an annual event channeled towards catching them young, stressing that Edo State is highly blessed with young sportsmen and women that if given the enabling environment to harness their God given talents in sports will do exploits in different areas of sporting fields.
According to him: "I want to use this opportunity to thank you all for honouring our calls in this press briefing. The main aim of this briefing is to tell us that our annual 5-Aside School football tournament within schools in Oredo Local Government
for talenty hunt is fixed for May 2 through 13, 2024 at three designated centres in the local government."
"This is not the first time we are organising this competition, it is an annual event. As you know we are highly committed to the development of youths empowerment in Edo State in line with Governor Godwin Obaseki's youth development programmes which has yielded positive results in the eight years of his leadership."
"For now we are focussing on football, but we have other sports development programmes lined up. Edo, as you know, is the home of sports in Nigeria. We are highly committed to restoring the lost glory of sports men and women in the state. In no distance time, we would be organising an athletics competition for our school children in Oredo. Our plan is to make Oredo home of Nigeria sports which it had been in the past."
"I also want to use this medium to commend the Chairman Edo State Sports Commission, Yussuf Alli, for his huge support and partnering with us. We will continue to be partners in progress as far as Edo State sports is concerned."
Meanwhile, Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Yussuf Alli, has reiterated the commission's commitment by providing the necessary logistics needed to make the competition a huge success.
"As we all know, sports has become a global business. I like to use this opportunity to inform that sports is a lucrative business. As we speak now, we have about seven players from Bendel Insurance and Edo Queens that are plying their professional trade in different clubs in Europe, and their clubs pay huge amount of foreign currency to Edo State government. Our amiable governor has set the agenda for youth development in sports, so we're duty bound to keep into such laudable programme. In Nigeria, Edo State is known for sports, so we are working very hard to regain our premier position in the annuals of Nigeria sports. I want to say that we are happy to partner with Oredo Local Government Council in this record breaking event sports programme for our young sports, boys and girls, in Oredo. We are ready to support you in providing facilities. We would do our best to ensure that the 5- Aside football tourney becomes a huge success."
