Ex International’s Cup Committee celebrates Soname at 60
The Organising Committee of the Ex International’s Cup has joined the Nigerian football community in honoring Hon Kunle Soname, OFR, on his birthday.
In a goodwill message issued to commemorate the occasion, the Committee referred to Soname as a "priceless asset to Nigerian football," highlighting how his contributions continue to influence youth empowerment, grassroots development, and the welfare of retired international players.
The Ex International’s Cup Committee hailed Soname’s “enduring contributions to governance, business, and sports in Nigeria” and prayed for continued good health, strength, and vision as he deepens his impact. The Committee noted that his journey from grassroots administration to building Bet9ja, ValueJet, and multiple football clubs exemplifies visionary leadership that inspires the next generation.
Hon Kunle Soname, the Founder of Bet9ja Foundation and President of Remo Stars, marked his 60th birthday with tributes from across the nation recognizing his contributions to governance, business, and sports. As a former Executive Chairman of Ikosi-Isheri LCDA, Soname has built a comprehensive football portfolio that includes Remo Stars, Beyond Limits, Remo Stars Ladies, and the Portuguese club CD Feirense. His investments also extend into aviation with ValueJet and youth academies such as the Remo Stars Sports Institute in Ikenne-Remo.
It is noteworthy that the Lagos State Football Association, led by Chairman Hajji Gafar Liameed, recently paid a courtesy visit to Soname in anticipation of the second edition of the Lagos Ex International’s Cup. During this visit, the LSFA formally presented the newly designed Ex International’s Cup trophy to Soname at his office, acknowledging his continuous financial and moral support for the tournament. Liameed commended Soname’s commitment to creating opportunities that guide young individuals towards meaningful careers and reduce youth restiveness.
The Ex International’s Cup was created to honor Nigerian ex-internationals who have served the country with distinction, while providing them a platform to influence young footballers and share their experiences. The inaugural edition, held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, saw FC Nwosu crowned champions and received praise from NFF officials and state FA chairmen for its organization and glamour. Soname, impressed by the level of play and organization, committed to providing even greater support for the next edition.
As preparations ramp up for the 2026 edition of the Lagos Ex International’s Cup, the collaboration with Bet9ja Foundation further strengthens the LSFA’s strategy of utilizing corporate support for sustainable football development throughout Lagos State.
The Committee concluded by wishing Hon Kunle Soname many more years of service to Nigerian football, referring to him as a “national treasure and true champion of youth and sports.”
