Ogbonda returns as Rivers Angels Head Coach

...New coaching crew announced ahead of 2026/2027 NWFL Season

The management of Rivers Angels Football Club has announced the appointment of a new coaching crew for The Jewels of Rivers ahead of the new Nigeria Women Football League season.

Whyte Ogbonda returns to the club as Head Coach. He will be assisted by Isaac Thomas Atonbere as Assistant Coach, while Sunday Uduh joins as Goalkeeper Coach.

The General Manager of Rivers Angels, Mrs. Matilda Otuene-Onyiloha expressed confidence in the new technical crew and described the appointment as the beginning of a new chapter for the club.

“We painstakingly picked the coaches, and we trust their capabilities,” Mrs. Otuene-Onyiloha stated.  

“It’s a new dawn for Rivers Angels, and we believe that this is our season.”

Speaking on his return, Head Coach Whyte Ogbonda said he is committed to restoring the club to winning ways and also addressed his previous exit.

“First, I want to apologise to the supporters of Rivers Angels and to the then Honourable Commissioner for Sports in Rivers State, Barr. Christopher Green, because they were not happy with the way I left the last time,” Ogbonda said.  

“I want to tell them that I’m very sorry for the way I left. Now I’m back to the team.”

“I’m happy to be back to Rivers Angels. I have travelled across the country, and I’m happy to be back in my state.”

On his targets for the season, Ogbonda was clear:

“Our target is to ensure we win the league and get the continental slot to play in the CAF Women’s Champions League.”

Coach Ogbonda also expressed confidence in the current squad and incoming players.  

“With what we have on the ground and the players we are expecting to join us, definitely we have what it takes to win the league and get the continental ticket.”

He further called on supporters to rally behind the team. 

“My message to Rivers Angels supporters and the football fraternity in Rivers State is to let them know that I’m back, and it’s time to rebuild the team again to secure our place on the continent.

"We want them to come and support us while we promise them good football this season.”

Whyte Ogbonda previously led Rivers Angels to Federation Cup glory and narrowly missed out on the league title during his last stint with the club.
