Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC) has called on stakeholders in the country’s basketball community to prioritize unity and the overall development of the sport as the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) prepares for elections later this year.

The appeal follows guidance from International Basketball Federation, which has outlined timelines and procedures for the electoral process in line with its statutes and internal regulations.

Speaking on the development, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade emphasized the importance of collective responsibility, urging stakeholders to set aside personal interests for the good of Nigerian basketball.

“This is a crucial moment for basketball in Nigeria. We must all put the game first. The future of our athletes, our national teams, and our global reputation depends on collective responsibility and adherence to due process,” Olopade said.

He further urged stakeholders to follow the framework provided by FIBA, stressing the need for dialogue, transparency, and respect for established regulations to ensure a credible electoral process.

According to FIBA, the tenure of the current NBBF board has been extended until October 15, 2026. Elections into a new board are expected to take place within a defined window between September 15 and October 15, 2026, after the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled for September.

Olopade reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to fostering stability within the sport, noting that aligning with international best practices remains essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s participation in global basketball competitions.
