On Tuesday, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Rt Hon Comrade Philip Shaibu, was presented with an award in recognition of his positive, revolutionary leadership and his determined efforts to reposition the Institute for greater global relevance.

The award was presented by the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), NIS Lagos State Chapter, led by its Chairman, Comrade Nyam Stephen, alongside key members of his executive team: Adeleye Yetunde Eniok, Ebenezer Ojo (Secretary), and Okorokwo Victory (Treasurer).

The presentation took place at the NIS office in Lagos, during a staff training programme organised to build capacity and strengthen institutional performance. What made the moment especially meaningful was the source of the recognition, staff members who work closely within the system and have directly experienced the early impact of the ongoing reforms.

Receiving the award, Shaibu expressed deep humility and reflection. He noted that he does not usually accept awards at the beginning of an assignment, preferring recognition only after a mission has been completed satisfactorily. However, he explained that this honour was different.

“Coming from the non-academic staff, who have felt the little impact we have made so far, I accept this award with all humility,” he said.

Shaibu the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State added that the recognition would not slow him down, but rather serve as fresh motivation to do more in restoring the National Institute for Sports to its core mandate and elevating it to international standards.

The gesture by NASU was widely seen as a vote of confidence in Shaibu’s leadership style, one defined by inclusiveness, reform, and a clear vision for Nigerian sports development. It also reflected a growing sense of hope within the Institute that NIS is on a steady path toward renewed relevance and excellence.

The journey may have just begun, but the impact of Philip Shaibu’s leadership is already being felt where it matters most.
