The leadership of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) under its President, Engr. Musa Ahmed Kida, has received a significant international endorsement following formal recognition by the world governing body, FIBA.

In a letter dated March 16, 2026, FIBA affirmed Kida-led administration as the legitimate leadership of Nigerian basketball, while also setting October 15, 2026, as the deadline for the federation’s next elective congress.

The decision not only settles lingering governance disputes but also reinforces confidence in the direction of the sport under Kida’s stewardship.

FIBA’s directive comes at a time when Nigerian basketball, particularly the women’s national team, D’Tigress, continues to make remarkable strides on the global stage.

In the latest FIBA World Rankings, Nigeria’s women’s team is ranked 8th in the world, a testament to sustained investment, planning, and competitive excellence fostered during Kida’s administration.

This achievement places Nigeria firmly among global basketball powerhouses such as the United States, France, and Australia, further underlining the effectiveness of the current leadership structure.

Under Kida, the NBBF has navigated turbulent periods marked by administrative disputes and international sanctions, yet emerged with renewed stability since 2022.

FIBA itself acknowledged its close monitoring of Nigeria’s basketball governance since 2017, noting that recent progress reflects a more structured and credible system.

The National Sports Commission has also thrown its weight behind the development. Director General Bukola Olopade called on stakeholders to rally behind FIBA’s position, describing it as a decisive step toward unity.

“FIBA has spoken, and that should bring an end to the divisions within the basketball fraternity,” Olopade stated.

For many observers, the combination of FIBA’s recognition and Nigeria’s rising global ranking provides a strong case for continuity in leadership. Kida’s tenure has not only restored international credibility but has also delivered measurable results on the court.

With the electoral process scheduled to follow the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in September, attention is now turning to the future of the federation. Stakeholders across the basketball community are expected to weigh the progress made under the current administration against the need for sustained growth.

As Nigeria prepares for another electoral cycle, the momentum built under Musa Kida, backed by global recognition and competitive success, positions him as a central figure in the ongoing development of basketball in the country.
