Ikogosi Road Race returns Oct 31 as Oyebanji deepens youth-centred agenda
The 2026 Ikogosi Road Race will hold on October 31, with Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji reaffirming his administration's commitment to youth empowerment, grassroots development and initiatives capable of stimulating the local economy.
The Governor's endorsement of the 17.5km race further underlines his support for youth-driven programmes that create opportunities for young people while opening new avenues for small and medium-scale businesses across the state.
Building on the success of the last edition, which received international commendation for its organisation, athlete welfare and prompt payment of prize money, organisers are working to make this year's race bigger, better and fully aligned with international standards.
The race route, from the scenic terrain of Ilawe to the world-famous Ikogosi Warm Spring, will provide more than a competitive sporting experience. It will showcase Ekiti's natural attractions, culture and infrastructure while placing the state on the map as an emerging destination for sports tourism, adventure and investment.
For the people of Ekiti, the event presents opportunities beyond the race itself. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders, artisans and other small businesses are expected to benefit from the influx of athletes, officials, visitors and spectators, while young people can gain opportunities in event management, hospitality, logistics, media, security, sports services and other areas.
The race is also expected to provide a major platform for youth engagement and talent discovery, particularly for athletes from Ekiti State. Beyond the opportunity to compete for the overall prize, Ekiti indigenes will have special incentives, including a reward for the first Ekiti athlete to cross the finish line, provided the athlete finishes among the top 10. This gives local athletes an added motivation to compete at the highest level while gaining valuable experience, exposure and opportunities to advance their sporting careers.
The organisers have been commended for their consistency and determination in sustaining the race and progressively raising its standards. With the October 31 date confirmed, expectations are high that the 2026 edition will set a new benchmark while delivering lasting economic and social benefits to the people of Ekiti.
Registration is officially open on the official website as organisers prepare for another epic event.
