Governor Umo Eno has praised Nigerian-born heavyweight sensation, Moses Itauma following his emphatic victory over Jermaine Franklin in a thrilling bout in Manchester.
Days before the fight, Itauma had reflected on his recent holiday in Akwa Ibom State, where he expressed deep appreciation for the peace, warmth, hospitality, and camaraderie he experienced throughout his stay.
The 21-year-old boxer, whose father hails from Adoroatabong in Eket Local Government Area and mother is Slovak, spoke glowingly about his roots, further endearing himself to the people of the state.
The highly anticipated clash, held at the Co-op Live Arena on Saturday night, saw Franklin enter the ring as the overwhelming favourite with an unbeaten record of 27 fights. However, Itauma (13-0) delivered a stunning performance, dominating from the opening round.
He sent Franklin to the canvas in the third round before finishing the contest in spectacular fashion with a powerful left uppercut followed by a decisive right-hand combination that left the American sprawled on the canvas. Referee Steve Gray promptly stepped in to stop the bout.
Reacting to the victory, Governor Eno expressed delight, describing Itauma as a true embodiment of the Akwa Ibom spirit and a worthy Nigerian ambassador.
“Great, I am delighted to hear this. True Akwa Ibom spirit, true Nigerian ambassador,” the Governor stated.
Now boasting an impressive 14-0 record, Itauma is rapidly closing in on a world title opportunity, currently ranked among the top contenders in both the WBO and WBA rankings.
Speaking after the fight, Itauma remained humble despite the growing global recognition.
“I thought I could win titles, but I didn’t know it would be so soon. I am just a young boy chasing a dream,” he said.
Boxing pundits have continued to shower praise on the rising star, highlighting his exceptional footwork, ring intelligence, and remarkable speed—qualities that set him apart as a future force in the heavyweight division.
