FIBA to decide NBBF's tenure – Kida

The President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Dr Musa Kida has said that the Federation of International Basketball Association, FIBA will decide on the fate of the present board following representations made to the global body by various stakeholders in Nigerian basketball.

Answering questions after briefing the media on the calendar of activities of the board in 2026, Kida said in Lagos, yesterday, that “of late Nigerian basketball has been in the eye of the storm, with some arguing when the mandate of the present board will end. All that has been collapsed into a single file

“The only thing I can say is that there have been a lot of engagement with the National Sports Commission and other senior stakeholders in the sport. We are talking about a matter of constitutionality, at the end of that definition, it will be subsumed by the governing body of basketball in the world, FIBA. As you all aware, there are some people who have petitioned FIBA and we as a federation, affiliated with the global body, can only wait for their verdict.

FIBA have their calendar, their time is not your time, so we have to be patient. What I can assure you is that whatever decision they come up with, we will respect it and abide by it.”

Kida also spoke on the activities of the board in 2025 that saw the Nigeria men's Premier Basketball League, which culminated in the finals held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He also spoke extensively on the women's Basketball League which now has two tiers: the Premier League, Divisions 1 & 2. “We appreciate the commitment of our sponsors, Zenith Bank for their unwavering support to the development of women's basketball in the country.”

Kida, who was flanked by his board members, also spoke of a new wave of sponsorship which would be unveiled in the coming months and pleaded with stakeholders to sheath their swords and chart a common course for the good of the game in Nigeria.
