D’Tigers win another thriller to stay on course

Nigeria’s D’Tigers continued their resurgence in the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers with an 80-79 victory over Guinea on Friday in Luanda, Angola, securing back-to-back wins after opening the window with an impressive 84-81 triumph over Tunisia.

Two games. Two wins.

More importantly, a team that entered this qualifying window needing results has rediscovered belief, resilience and momentum. Perhaps that is why this group deserves a new nickname: The Nigerian Redeem Team.

Against Guinea, Nigeria looked in control early, taking a 23-17 lead after the opening quarter before carrying a 46-40 advantage into halftime. Guinea responded with a dominant third quarter, outscoring Nigeria 28-16 to seize a six-point lead heading into the final period.

Instead of folding, D’Tigers delivered when it mattered most.

Nigeria tightened its defense in the fourth quarter, holding Guinea to just 11 points while scoring 18 of their own to escape with a dramatic one-point victory.

The statistics underline just how competitive the contest was. Nigeria led for nearly 26 minutes, built an 11-point advantage, and survived six lead changes before making the decisive plays in the closing moments.

Caleb Agada once again led by example, finishing with a game-high 22 points on an efficient 7-of-13 shooting, including three three-pointers. Uche Iroegbu added 14 points, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu contributed 10, while Chimezie Metu chipped in nine points in another balanced team performance.

What has stood out most over the first two games, however, has not simply been individual performances but the collective identity emerging under Head Coach David Fizdale.

Against Tunisia, Nigeria demonstrated composure and offensive execution to earn an 84-81 victory. Against Guinea, the team showed toughness, discipline and resilience, recovering from a difficult third quarter to close out one of the tournament’s most dramatic finishes.

For a program that has endured disappointment in recent qualification windows, these victories represent more than two wins in the standings. They represent the beginning of a reset.

This roster blends experienced internationals with hungry newcomers, all buying into a common purpose. The chemistry continues to improve with each game, and the confidence within the group is becoming increasingly evident.

Nigeria now carries valuable momentum into its final game of the window, knowing that every victory strengthens its path toward the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The journey is not complete, but D’Tigers have reminded African basketball why they have long been one of the continent’s premier programmes.
