PRCommonwealth Games: AFN holds 3-day National Trials in Lagos this month
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria [AFN] has scheduled its national trials to hold between Saturday, 20th June and Monday, 22nd June, 2026 at the Yabatech Sports Complex, Yaba, Lagos State, to select track and field athletes to represent the country at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The arrival date for the trials which will feature 32 events for men and women is Friday, 19th June, while departure is is Tuesday, 23rd June, 2026.
A statement by AFN’s Media Co-ordinator, Dr. Kola Oredipe, says the Technical Committee led by Mr. Gabriel Okon, has released qualifying standards for both Nigerian and foreign-based athletes.
It notes that while athletes for 100m, 200m and 400m men and women would be eligible to participate based on the set standards, other track and field events will remain open for participation.
The statement emphasizes that the Federation will provide accommodation for athletes who made the standard within the year under review, with names of qualified athletes expected to be published soon.
It further notes that Secretary-General of the AFN, Mr. Israel Inwang, has issued letters of invitation to State Directors of Sports, Chairmen of State Athletics Associations, Coaches, Managers, Military, Para-military athletics bodies and athletics clubs for participation.
The statement adds that President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, Chief Tonobok Okowa, is inviting stakeholders and athletics fans across the country to prepare to be part of the national trials.
The AFN boss is appreciating the current leadership of the National Sports Commission, for the support to the federation and the athletes over this period.
