For the first time in his career, Super Eagles defender, Calvin Bassey captained a team, Fulham and it ended in a defeat to Chelsea at the Craven Cottage.

It's the first the 26-year-old is assuming the leadership role in a competitive match

Apart from ending up losing his first match as captain, he also received a yellow card in the first game of the season.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso began his first full season with a pulsating 3-2 away victory over Fulham.

Chelsea raced to the lead in just the first minute with Joao Pedro but Josh King equalised 23rd minute later only for Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer to put the Blues 3-1 in the 41st and 49th minutes.

Gonzalo García reduced the deficit for Fulham in the 54th minute.
