Awoniyi scores first goal of the season

Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi scored his first goal of the season as Nottingham Forest secured a crucial 2-0 victory over Brentford to move further away from the Premier League relegation zone.

The 28-year-old was introduced to the game in the 68th minute with Forest leading, and he made an instant impact, scoring 11 minutes later to seal the win and end Brentford’s seven-match unbeaten run at home.

Sean Dyche’s side made a superb start to the game as Igor Jesus scored just 12 minutes in.

Super Eagles fullback Ola Aina was involved in the goal, clipping a cross which was deflected into the path of the Brazilian. The striker then brought the ball down with his chest before firing a right-footed volley into the far corner, giving the visitors the lead.

The goalscorer gave way for Awoniyi in the second half as Nottingham Forest pushed for another goal to seal the game. Few minutes later, the Nigerian made a brilliant individual run into the box before slotting the ball past Kelleher and into the back of the net, securing all three points for his side.

Despite the victory, Nottingham Forest remain 17th on the table with 25 points, but they are now five points above the relegation zone. With the defeat, Brentford missed the chance to climb into the top five, and instead remain eight with 33 points.

Awoniyi’s goal marks not only his first of the season, but his first since February 11, 2025 when he found the back of the net in a 2-2 draw against Exeter.
