The Authentic Nigeria Football and Allied Sports Supporters Club (ANFASSC) stole the spotlight at the Freedom Cup Novelty Football Tournament organized by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with the U.S. Mission in Nigeria.
Held in Lekki, Lagos, the event was part of activities marking 250 years of American Independence and featured friendly matches involving Team Legacy, Team Liberty, Team Opportunity, and Team Truth. The tournament celebrated friendship, unity, cultural exchange, and the enduring relationship between Nigeria and the United States.
ANFASSC, under the leadership of its National President, Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi, provided the biggest entertainment of the day with a captivating display of music, dance, and coordinated supporter culture. Leading from the front, Ogunjimi marshalled his members in a colourful performance that transformed the venue into a carnival atmosphere, thrilling spectators and dignitaries alike.
The supporters club filled the arena with pulsating drumbeats, blaring trumpets, traditional musical instruments, and energetic songs that kept the crowd engaged throughout the event. Their performance was so infectious that the U.S. Consul General in Lagos, Rick Swart, joined in the excitement, dancing along to the music and soaking in the vibrant Nigerian sporting culture on display.
The Consul General was welcomed to the event by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, as both sides reaffirmed the importance of sports as a tool for strengthening people-to-people connections and international partnerships.
Beyond cheering teams, ANFASSC showcased the richness of Nigeria's sports tradition to an international audience, earning admiration from guests and participants.
Led by Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi, ANFASSC demonstrated why it remains the country's foremost supporters groups, using sports, music, and culture to unite people and create memorable experiences.
Prince Abayomi Ogunjimi said at the event that ANFASSC will always ensure that the rich sporting heritage of Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria, is displayed anytime it is called upon.
