Director of Football at Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin FC, Chief Alloy Chuwuemeka, has praised the team’s resilience and fighting spirit following their vital victory in Sokoto that secured their Nigeria National League (NNL) status for another season.
ABS Ilorin FC defied the odds with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Sokoto United at the Giginya Memorial Stadium on Saturday. The victory was crucial, as the Ilorin-based side needed not only to secure all three points but also rely on a favorable result elsewhere to avoid relegation.

The decisive moment came in the 28th minute through a rather unusual sequence of play. Captain Timothy Boniface delivered a long-range free kick from inside his own half, which was inadvertently headed into the net by a Sokoto United defender in a defensive error, handing ABS the lead.
Despite intense pressure from the hosts and the high stakes of the encounter, ABS Ilorin FC showed composure and determination, holding on to their slender advantage until the final whistle. Their survival was ultimately confirmed as Lobi Stars edged City FC in Abuja, completing a remarkable escape from relegation.
Chief Alloy Chuwuemeka addressing the team on Tuesday Morning upon their arrival in Ilroin from Sokoto, lauded the team’s character and commitment throughout the challenging fixture.
“This is a team that has shown incredible resilience and belief, even in the most difficult circumstances. The players gave everything on the pitch, and this result is a testament to their hard work and unity,” he said.
He further commended the technical crew and supporters for their unwavering backing, emphasizing that the club’s survival was a collective effort.
