The athletics competition at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow gets underway with Nigeria's Kanyinsola Ajayi among a select group of elite sprinters who have been granted automatic qualification to the men's 100 metres semi-finals based on their world rankings.

Ajayi, Nigeria's national record holder, will skip the preliminary rounds and begin his campaign directly in the semi-finals, thanks to his impressive standing on the global rankings.

Also receiving byes into the semi-finals are South Africa's Gift Leotlela, Jamaica's Ackeem Blake, Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala, Canada's Jerome Blake, Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme, and Australia's Lachlan Kennedy.

The automatic qualification recognises the athletes' performances and rankings on the international circuit, allowing them to join the competition at the semi-final stage.

For Team Nigeria, Ajayi's direct entry underlines his status as one of the Commonwealth's leading sprinters and strengthens the country's medal hopes in the blue-riband event.

With several of the world's fastest men set to line up in the semi-finals, the men's 100 metres promises to be one of the standout events as athletics begins at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
