AFN Vice President lauds Team Nigeria's impressive Commonwealth Games performance

The 2nd Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Akuchukwu Aghazu, has praised Team Nigeria for its impressive outing at the just concluded 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the athletes' performances as a reflection of their dedication, discipline and quality preparation.

Aghazu commended the commitment displayed by Team Nigeria from the build-up to the Games through to the end of the competition, noting that the athletes remained focused on achieving success for the country.

"From the preparations to the end of the Games, our athletes demonstrated total commitment and dedication. Their work ethic was exceptional, and the relationship between the athletes and officials was excellent throughout the competition. That unity contributed greatly to our success."

She reserved special praise for the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Honourable Bukola Olopade, whose leadership she described as invaluable.

"Honourable Bukola Olopade was exceptional before and during the Games. His advice, motivational words and problem-solving abilities came at the right moments. He ensured that the athletes and officials had the support they needed to perform at their best."

Aghazu also applauded the welfare package provided for Team Nigeria.

"The availability of funds, as well as the prompt payment of allowances and bonuses, boosted the morale of everyone. It allowed the athletes to concentrate fully on competing."

The AFN chieftain equally lauded the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, for his fatherly role throughout the Games.

"Mallam Shehu Dikko was a father figure to both the athletes and officials. He was always available, supportive and genuinely concerned about the welfare of everyone in the team."

According to Aghazu, Team Nigeria's achievements across athletics, judo, para powerlifting, weightlifting and swimming reflected the determination of the country's athletes.

"Whether in athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, para powerlifting, weightlifting or swimming, every athlete gave their best. They competed with pride and represented Nigeria admirably."

She also highlighted the positive relationship between the athletes and AFN President, Chief Tonobok Okowa, saying his accessibility helped maintain harmony within the team.

"Chief Tonobok Okowa maintained a very cordial relationship with the athletes. Whenever issues arose, they were addressed quickly, creating a peaceful atmosphere that allowed everyone to focus on performance."

Looking ahead, Aghazu expressed confidence that with the continued backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Sports Commission, Team Nigeria would achieve even greater success at future international competitions.

"With the level of support we received from the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission, I believe future Games and championships will witness even better performances from Team Nigeria."

72 member Team Nigeria left Glasgow with 24 medals of which 10 were gold to finish on the 7th spot on the overall table.
