NRFF records major grassroots boost as Rugby Rising hits 5,000

The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) has recorded a significant milestone in grassroots development, with over 5,000 girls participating in the Rugby Rising programme, which concludes this weekend.

The initiative delivered intensive training sessions to young participants across the country, sparking widespread enthusiasm and increasing female participation in the sport.

Supervised by NRFF board member Hussain Wuraola and implemented by 30 coaches nationwide, the programme took rugby to schools and academies while strictly adhering to guidelines set by World Rugby. The effort has greatly improved acceptance of the sport among young girls.

Commending the coaches for their dedication, Wuraola noted that their commitment helped break barriers and expand the game into previously unreached areas. She expressed confidence that the future of women’s rugby in Nigeria is on a strong footing given the growing interest among young players.

The four-month training programme kicked off in November and will officially conclude in February.
