NPFL: Monday Odigie Dumps Bendel Insurance
Bendel Insurance head Monday Odigie may have dumped the Benin Arsenal for good, having been absent from his duty post without leave for the past six days.
According to information at the disposal of globalsportsng.com, the tough-talking coach has failed to show up in training and meetings since the team lost to Plateau United 2-0 in their Nigeria Premier Football League match 23 fixture at Jos International Stadium on March 3.
His assistant, Greg, took charge of the team in their 2-0 home win over Gombe United on Friday, with Ishmael Seriki’s first half securing them maximum points in the matchday 24 encounter at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
According to reliable sources, the gaffer may have already resigned his position, which he has been threatening to do since the beginning of the season.
Odigie, who is averse to criticism and not press-friendly, has been in the saddle at Bendel Insurance since 2018 and guided them back to the top flight in the penultimate season.
The team sent heads turning after going the regular 2022–2023 season unbeaten, but failed to live up to expectations in the ensuing championship play-off.
He previously coached Bayelsa United and served in an assistant capacity at Enyimba and the Nigeria U17 team, where he later assumed the position of head coach.
Insurance temporarily moved up from 9th to 7th in the standings by virtue of Friday’s win over visiting Gombe United. They have 34 points from 24 matches and have played a match more than the rest of the teams.
Next for the Edo State-sponsored team in the NPFL is a clash with Akwa United on March 13 at Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
