Chinecherem Nnamndi won gold in men's javelin throw while Patience Okon led women 4x400m claim gold to increase Nigeria's athletics medal to 11 as athletics events ended on Friday 22nd March 2024.
The women's 4x400m team members Esther Joseph, Ba Ogunmokun and Omolara Ogunmakinju finished their team race behind the African Games record of 3:27.08 set by Nigeria in Nairobi 1987.
Other Nigerian medalist in athletics on Friday evening were Oyesade Olatoye, silver in shotput, Olajide Olayinka, silver women's 200m while Consider Ekanem got bronze in men's 200m.
The Athletics Federation of Nigeria Technical Director, Coach Samuel Onikeku must be happy his athletes have achieved his prediction of least 10 medals when the athletics events started last Monday at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Nigeria won the athletics events with 11 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze medals. Ethiopia and South Africa followed in second and third with 7 gold medals each. The 13th African Games will come to an end with closing ceremony on Saturday evening.
With a handful of events left,Nigeria has been able consolidated her 2nd position on the log behind Egypt with 41 gold, 29 silver and 38 bronze medals. South Africa trail with 32 golds in 3rd position.
