The Nationwide League One (NLO) has listed the significant benefits for clubs, after reverting to the home and away format for the 2026 football season.

This pivotal decision was made during the Annual General Meeting held in Abuja, where it was announced that starting from the upcoming 2026 season, we will revert to our traditional home and away league structure. This step is crucial for revitalizing the spirit and competitiveness that our league represents.

Switching back to the home and away format brings substantial advantages for clubs, players, fans, and the league as a whole. A primary benefit lies in fostering balanced and fair competition. Each team will have the opportunity to host matches at their home venue or an approved designated stadium, enabling clubs to leverage local support, significantly boosting team performance and morale.

Moreover, this return encourages increased fan engagement. Supporters will have the chance to attend matches in their club's stadium, creating an electrifying atmosphere that enhances community involvement and loyalty.

Financially, clubs will gain from enhanced revenue opportunities through ticket sales, merchandise, and concessions during home matches. This sets a strong foundation for sponsor and partner visibility, leading to improved commercial prospects and long-term sustainability for our clubs.

As we transition back to this structure, it is imperative for all clubs to focus on meticulous planning and execution of match logistics. This encompasses ensuring stadium readiness, implementing security measures, adhering to health protocols, and coordinating effectively with local authorities.

With the power to set gate fees for home matches, thorough management of these elements will not only optimize revenue but also guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

The Nationwide League One Secretariat will oversee referee indemnity, players’ insurance, pre-competition medical assessments, players’ licenses, and league operations funded through registration fees.

We call on clubs to review their operational plans and reach out to the league office for any guidance or resources needed to enact this format seamlessly.

This return to the home and away structure will undoubtedly elevate the standard of play in the Nationwide League One Division and significantly contribute to the growth of football in our nation.
