Basketball: Igboche Mark calls for overhaul, commends Sports Commission

President of Mark mentors basketball club and major stakeholder in Nigerian basketball, Igboche Mark has praised the recent improvements in the nation’s sporting landscape, citing the successful hosting of the Continental African Association (CAA) tournaments and para-sport events in Abeokuta.

Mark commended the National Sports Commission (NSC) for what he described as a renewed commitment to sports development, noting that increased competitions are giving athletes essential opportunities to grow.

“We are seeing progress, and I look forward to more events that will give our athletes exposure and experience,” he said.

Speaking on the forthcoming Nigeria Basketball Federation (NEBF) elections, Mark expressed hope that the Commission would deliver a transparent process. He stressed that Nigerian basketball requires a “total overhaul,” beginning with new leadership capable of driving reform.

Mark criticised the current domestic basketball league, describing it as an “abridged system” that falls short of developing players effectively. He argued that without a full league structure and strong grassroots programmes, Nigeria will continue to fall behind in basketball development.

“If given the opportunity, my focus would be on grassroots development, a structured talent pathway, and transparent administration,” he noted.

According to Mark, a well-organised league backed by grassroots investment would not only strengthen the home-based game but also boost Nigeria’s competitiveness internationally.

His remarks reflect growing calls among stakeholders for systemic reform in Nigerian basketball, particularly in governance, league structure, grassroots development, and talent identification.

The upcoming NBBF elections are expected to be a decisive moment for the sport, with many urging reforms that can create sustainable pathways for players and revitalise basketball across the country.
