Awoniyi breaks 56-day-old goal drought
After 56 days drought, Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi has finally get on the English Premier League sheet.
The former Liverpool attacker scored Nothingham Forest's third goal in their 3-0 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur in the matchday 31, latching on an assist Neco Willaims to score Forest's third goal two minutes from regulation time.
The Nigerian was a 71st minute substitute for Igor Jesus while Forest were already 2-0 up and he proved his introduction with a trademark goal in the 88th minute.
Incidentally, Jesus started the Tottenham route with the first goal shortly before half time while Morgan Gibbs-White increased the tally in the 62nd minute before Awoniyi sealed the victory with the third goal. His celebration was later to earn him a yellow card.
It was Awoniyi's second goal in 11 games for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this season.
Awoniyi has endured a severely challenge since the 2024/2025 season with Nottingham Forest, highlighted by a life-threatening abdominal injury sustained in May 2025.
In May 2025 in a Premier League match against Leicester City, Awoniyi collided with the goalpost. He initially continued playing despite appearing to be in discomfort before requiring emergency surgery.
Following the emergency surgery, the 27-year-old striker was placed in an induced coma to manage his recovery and regulate his heart rate.
As of mid-May 2025, Awoniyi was recovering, with reports confirming he was out of the coma, "recovering well," and in stable condition.
The injury sparked discussion over player safety, as the striker was allowed to stay on the pitch for roughly 10 minutes after the collision before his condition worsened.
