Wikki 1 has emerged champion in the senior men category at the 2025 President Beach Volleyball Championship held at Murtala Mohammed Square in Kaduna.
This year's edition witnessed thrilling matches and display of talents from various teams across Nigeria.
Wikki 1 from Bauchi State, defeated the Nigerian Correctional Service 2 sets to 0, to earn a cash prize of ₦400,000, while the runners-up received ₦300,000.
Defending champions, Kada Kings dropped to third place, beating the Anister team from Jos 2 sets to 0, and took home ₦200,000.
In the women’s category, Kada Emeralds senior team better Adamawa Spikers with a similar scoreline of 2 sets to 0. thus walking away with ₦400,000, while Adamawa Spikers, in a commendable performance, received ₦300,000 for their second-place finish.
The third position went to Gikwe Babes from Abuja, who defeated Destiny Hands 2 sets to 0, earning ₦200,000 for their efforts.
The championship also saw intense competition in the junior categories, in the boys’ Under-17 category, Kada Prince claimed victory over Young Eagles 2 sets to 0, receiving ₦300,000, while Young Eagles took home ₦200,000 for their second-place finish, third place went to Refiners Spikers, who beat Gikwe team from Abuja 2 sets to 0.
In the Under-17 girls’ category, Golden Spikers from Adamawa outperformed Young Eagles from Kaduna with a score of 2 sets to 0, earning ₦300,000. Refiners team secured third place after edging out Musa Rifkatu’s team 2 sets to 1.
Andrew Sunday, from the Bauchi senior men’s team, expressed his excitement at winning the championship, attributing the success to rigorous training and practice. “I am so excited and happy to be the champion of the 2025 President Beach Volleyball Cup. The secret is to continue training hard, we are focused on future competitions and will strive for excellence,” he said, while encouraging younger players to dedicate themselves to hard work and training is the key.
Joy Lawrence, a key player for the Kada Emeralds, echoed similarsentiments, highlighting the hard work and teamwork that contributed to their victory in a challenging match. “The opponent were strong, but we pulled together and worked as a team to secure the win,” she noted.
The event also welcomed five prominent volleyball academies: Peace Spikers (Narayi), Destiny Hands (Sabon Tasha), Young Eagles (Television), Dolphin (Goningora), and Florish (Narayi), each showcasing budding talent in the sport.
As part of a commitment to environmental sustainability, Engineer Musa Nimrod, president of the Beach Volleyball Federation, distributed economic trees to players and journalists, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts in sports.
He thanked the Kaduna State government for facilitating the event and emphasised grassroots development of the sport. “We are looking forward to the next year’s President’s Club and continuing our efforts to promote volleyball in schools,” he stated, highlighting Nigeria’s top ranking in women’s volleyball in Africa.
Nimrod outlined plans for upcoming training camps across Nigeria, aiming to prepare athletes for the 2026 Olympic Youth Games in Senegal, where Nigeria intends to field a strong representation.
Chief Martin Malandy, technical director of the volleyball federation, praised the high performance levels demonstrated at this year’s championship, he emphasized that the tournament not only served as a competitive event but also aimed to identify talented players for future national representation in African beach volleyball competitions.
In recognition of his contributions to promoting beach volleyball, Engineer Musa Nimrod was honored with an award of excellence from the people of Adamawa State, celebrating his dedication to sports development in Nigeria.
The successful conclusion of the 2025 President Beach Volleyball Championship not only highlighted the sport’s growth and popularity but also reinforced the commitment of players and officials alike to elevate Nigeria’s standing in international beach volleyball competitions.
