Mbo wins Rep. Martins Esin Unity Cup
Mbo Local Government Area has emerged champions of the maiden edition of Rep. Martins Esin Unity Cup.
Mbo won the cup after defeating Udung Uko Local Area by one goal to nothing in the final match, which took place at the Oron township stadium on Sunday.
Also, Oron Local Government Area settled for third position after edging out Okobo Local Government Area in a third place match.
In his remarks, the sponsor of the tournament and member representing Oron/Mbo/Okobo/Udung Uko/Urueoffong Oruko Federal Constituency, Hon. Martins Esin, said the tournament was initiated to unite the people of his constituency.
Hon. Martins Esin said he is committed to promoting sporting activities in Oron Federal Constituency, adding that he will make the tournament more competitive and bigger next year.
While promising to domesticate sporting activities in the Federal Constituency, the lawmaker noted that he will ensure the renovation of the Oron township stadium which serves as the venue for the tournament to give it a new look before the next edition.
According to him, “This tournament is to promote unity among the five Local Government Areas of the constituency. It will take place yearly throughout my tenure. We will expand this competition in order to discover more stars amongst the youth of Oron Federal Constituency.”
The National Assemblyman, who is the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Youth, announced N2 million for the winner, N1 million for the runners up, while third place smiled home with N600, 000.
He further presented prizes to the best referee, best spectator, best behave team, best goalkeeper, highest goals scorer as well as most valuable player.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, the LOC Chairman, Mr. John Ekpenyong thanked the sponsor for giving them the opportunity to serve in the committee. Ekpenyong, who is the National president of Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF), disclosed that best selected best players of the tournament would form a new football club, which will be known as Oron United.
Ekpenyong used the opportunity to solicit for support from the National Assembly member to make the formation of the new club a reality.
